A.I. and Ethics

Media Journalism Class

With a rapidly changing technological landscape in the fields of science, law, medicine, and even in people’s homes, we sought to ask CRLS: What do you know about or think of AI? What do you know about the ethics of AI? We also had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Suren Jayasuriya, an assistant professor at Arizona State University. Dr. Jayasuriya specializes in Electrical Engineering, and we asked him about his work in AI, his views on the ethical implications of AI, and how it could shape the future.

The study and advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has significantly impacted society, providing assistance on tasks that normally require many people, or are too dangerous, aiding with certain functions that some are not able to perform on their own, and assisting scientists and researchers in deep research and understanding of different STEM fields. However, there are also some serious concerns about AI negatively impacting society as well. It has become apparent that the humans who are teaching and coding artificial intelligence have often translated their own biases into the technology, which has resulted in a controversy on whether or not AI is truly ethical, in the hands of humanity.
